This zoning and interior design project dealt with designing the Living, Dining, Kitchen and Backyard of a home in Coimbatore, India
The design objective for this residence was rooted in the clients' desire to escape the constraints of their previous, "too enclosed" living environment. They sought a home that embraced openness and natural light, emphasizing deliberate color schemes that enhance the overall aesthetic.
By carefully curating a new selection of furniture and maximizing space through thoughtful interior design and decoration, the design aims to create a welcoming atmosphere that fosters comfort and connection.
This approach not only responds to their needs but also transforms the living space into an inviting sanctuary that reflects their lifestyle.
FLOOR ZONING
L-shaped floor plans provide exceptional versatility and flexibility, allowing for diverse furniture arrangements that cater to individual preferences. This adaptable layout enables customization and seamless integration of various components, while the central courtyard enhances the spatial experience.
By strategically positioning this outdoor space, the design maximises natural light and promotes effective ventilation, creating a harmonious balance between interior and exterior environments. The L-shaped configuration fosters a dynamic living experience that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The residence’s open-plan design, articulated through its L-shaped profile, embodies a philosophy of transparency and connectivity. Uninterrupted sightlines invite occupants to experience the home as a cohesive entity rather than a series of isolated spaces. Extensive glazing blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior, fostering unity and flow.
This airy environment enhances both aesthetic experience and social interaction, encouraging a deeper engagement with the surrounding landscape.

The kitchen design prioritized capturing stunning views for the homeowners during daily activities. To enhance this connection, expansive glass doors were seamlessly integrated into the plans. This thoughtful addition invites natural light and fosters a vibrant atmosphere, transforming the kitchen into a space where culinary experiences are enriched by the surrounding landscape.
Situated at the center of the L-shaped layout, the dining area serves as a focal point for the entire home. Wall punctures on either side of the space, paired with fixed glass windows, enhance the visual connection and create a sense of expansive openness. This thoughtful design approach not only invites natural light but also fosters a seamless flow between the dining area and surrounding spaces, enriching the overall experience of the home.
The kitchen showcases a monochrome color scheme for cabinetry and countertops, defined by distinct finishes and textures. Matte white laminate and charcoal grey fluted elements alternate to create a cohesive look. This design beautifully complements the charcoal grey granite kitchen island and sleek black matte fixtures.
A white marble secondary island provides comfortable high seating while ensuring an unobstructed flow from the adjacent sink and wash area. The overall result is a sophisticated and functional space that harmonizes style and practicality.
DINING
The fluted wood panelled wall fixture is designed to harmonize with the cabinetry and select kitchen walls, creating a cohesive look. The dining table features a white marble top, surrounded by teak wood chairs with white fabric cushions, echoing the secondary kitchen island. Ceiling downlights provide even illumination, while pendant lights are strategically hung above key areas, including the dining table, piano zone, and informal living space. This lighting arrangement enhances both functionality and ambiance, ensuring an inviting atmosphere throughout the home.
LOUNGE SEATING
The backyard, positioned within the inner side of the L-shaped plan, ensures ample daylight reaches the lower level's crevices and corners. This thoughtful arrangement enhances the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Outdoor seating areas provide inviting views of the city, creating a serene retreat. Overall, the design seamlessly blends natural light with picturesque vistas, enriching the living experience. An umbrella shades two waterproof fabric lounge sofas, separated by a low table and complemented by cane pots for plants. A centrally placed fireplace adds warmth, while water features on either side of the entry door enhance the inviting atmosphere.
OUTDOOR SEATING
This extended seating area, adjacent to the dining space, serves as an informal zone for reconnection and rejuvenation. The ceiling features linear wooden panels with integrated lighting that complements rather than overpowers the natural light entering from the home.
Cane and jute wire chairs enhance the space, while lush greenery from potted plants and a central tree adds a vibrant touch. This design fosters a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and socializing.
